When I was young and not involved with horse racing, Eddie Arcaro would often appear on the covers of the most popular magazines of the day. Many years later, I would have the opportunity to meet the man on the magazine covers. Eddie and I were touring the country together to raise money for the Don MacBeth Fund for Disabled Riders. I would sit up with him late into the night in some hotel bar, trying to make one drink last until closing time. He would reflect back to racing’s golden age. The many drinks seemed to make his memory more clear and his stories more fascinating. I am thankful for the privilege of knowing this man and being able to retell his stories to anyone willing to listen.
